baby bucks
"here"... the baby found a wad of cash in his momma's purse and passed a little out to everyone in the room. ahh the bliss of childhood, he's still at the age where it means nothing to him.

baby gets a cell phone
the baby's first Christmas (well actually he was around last year but only 4 weeks old.) we gave him a toy cell phone. it went like this... his eye's lit up "what is it?" - then he knew "it's a phone!" - and then he killed everyone in the room with brilliant impersonations of his mother on the phone... "yea" "yea yea yea" "yea yea".

domestic
this week’s PhotoFriday theme “Domestic”, gives us a nice op to throw up one of the beautiful shots sent in by reader Adele, who wrote us about the circular garden she put in this year that was inspired by Adam Purple. "Adam's dream and hard work lives on"…

Indian Larry rides off

larry

Such sad news this week that Indian Larry had died after performing a motorcycle stunt last weekend. Indian Larry was a GREAT man, an artist, innovator and all-around cool dude. and between his studio in Williamsburg and his home in the East Village he was a New York homeboy. in addition to his passion for metal sculpture and building bikes, Larry's honest and edgy style brought him several TV appearances over the years, including a regular stint on the Discovery Channel. his episode of The Great Biker Build Off is scheduled to run several times this month. we’d had the pleasure of meeting Larry and his beautiful wife Bambi several times over the years, and behind his tough exterior he was a funny and sweet guy. deepest condolences to his wife Bambi, family and friends. the world will miss his vibrant and unique spirit.

flower glory
a lovely person has been writing us about Adam Purple and her own circular garden created in his honor "finally have fragrant, night blooming moon flower vines, in bloom, and morning glories blooming. Hummingbirds are dive bombing each other around the feeder". her note inspired us to put up some pics of these florescent morning glories overtaking our porch upstate...

Buddy and the baby - part 2
the thing is, Buddy isn’t much of a kisser. if he really likes you, you might get one. except for our friend's baby. we can’t keep Buddy away from him. about now he's realized we don’t want him licking the baby all day. so he sits patiently, watching for a moment when we look away, and he runs in and licks him like a lollypop…

neighborhood loyalty
continuing with submission Thursday... reader Marissa was kind enough to share a story she'd written on life in NYC. we love this snippet on neighborhood aesthetics...
“New Yorkers carry immense pride for the neighborhoods they live in. Here in New York it’s no shock that homeless people live on almost every single street. But what you may not realize is that even they proudly represent their neighborhoods. For instance, I live in an area called Murray Hill. It’s known for being a little pretentious and somewhat high-fashion. Therefore, the homeless woman who lives outside my building stylishly sports Ugg Boots, a Louis Vuitton bag and Gucci shades. If that’s not neighborhood loyalty, I don’t know what is!"

seeing Adam Purple outside our door in the LES everyday, we give this observation a hearty AMEN!

the purple guy
if you live in the EV or LES you've probably seen Adam Purple around, but unless you moved here about 20 years ago you might not know who he is... (this pic was taken a few weeks ago when we stopped to chat with Adam about the progress of the Surface Hotel "monstrosity", as Adam calls it :-)

adam

Adam Purple has been a beloved activist, artist and icon on the Lower East Side for several decades. he's most known for The Garden of Eden - a huge circular garden he developed and nurtured on Forsythe in the 70's-80's (that was bulldozed in 1986 for low income housing). the garden was a glorious and massive work of art that was made using all kinds of abandoned debris that Adam found around the city and recycled, including horse manure. Adam not only brought a great work of beauty, peace and enjoyment to the people of the neighborhood, but he was known for passing around the harvest. since the garden was destroyed, he's moved to the East Village and continues his activism and recycling work throughout the neighborhood.

if you're new to the EV or LES take a minute to read a little about one of the area's true homesteaders, it was a different world just a decade ago. and if you see the "purple guy" in the hood, please treat him with the honor and respect he deserves, anarchist heroes come in all shapes and sizes.
