Graffiti For U & Me
When friends visit New York City, they're often surprised to learn that much of the graffiti they see around town is "legal". From massive art exhibits to designated mural walls...

The city allows graffiti in public spaces, especially in run down areas, to add color. "Legal graffiti", for the kids, to make them happy, and their neighborhoods less drab.

Graffiti is art from the heart
Infamy, a film we saw last year at the ResFest has been released on DVD and it's fantastic! a must see for anyone who wants to know more about this conflicted urban art form. It's a movie that answers the question "Why do they do it?" and takes you deep into the wide diversity of the art, style nuances, street rules and passion and pain behind it. It stars our friend Claw and she kicks-ass.

Legal graffiti
Can real graffiti be legal? not really. The outlaw element of hard core graffiti is at the heart of the culture and art. But legal outdoor graffiti exhibits are still amazing in their own right and provide a fantastic canvas for some beautiful work. The 5 Points warehouse block in Queens, NY is a great example...

fresh graf
one of the things we love best about the Lower East Side is the fresh street art that pops up every day. couple days ago we noticed WK had just hit a spot we'd recently photographed, adding some cool new wheat paste images. and Wooster's got some great shots of him throwing it up.

true elf false
more cool stuff from George... "Someone did this great graffiti on our block to a couple of posters that have been up since thanksgiving. Makes you think...is Elf true or false...and why can't the talented Will Ferrell make better movies?". it also makes us think - dam, we love New Yorkers!... better take down those 6 month old movie posters, or we'll take matters into our own hands. outlaw rocker infiltrates music stores
cool little follow-up on the great story about the artist Bansky putting up his own works in 4 of NY's top museums... we were talking to our musician friend Joe about it and he told us he's been doing the same thing with his CD's for years! he goes into music stores around the city and leaves his CD's. files 'em himself into the correct genre, alphabetized and all. just for the fuck of it. even has his friends try and buy them once in a while. (and he credits a friend for the idea, maybe it's happening all over!) Dam, we love anarchist artists.

old school NY stickers and flyers
here's a cool page of stickers peeled off walls in the LES in the mid 90's. some great design and imagery. if you were in the EV or LES back then, these stickers will give you a wicked flashback! (for us they include: some designed by friends, places we used ta hang, a couple for friend's bands, even one for a company we used to work for.)

and check out this killer site called: What is Hip Hop? that features inventive "Old School Party Flyers" from back in the dayz when hip hop and rap were just starting to break...

squirrley
we liked this squirrel graf on Ludlow Street and snapped it a couple weeks ago for those squirrel lovers out there. and then mining our new favorite site, WoosterCollective.com, we spotted this cool profile of the artist!

street art to the highest power
holy shit! WoosterCollective.com is THE BOMB! we'd seen this site linked around but never dove in until today... a "A Celebration of Street Art", it's PACKED with tons of fantastic shots of street art, graffiti, website links, news, the latest parties and openings and great writing. but what really blows us away is the depth and breath of coverage, with several new posts daily, and beautiful and amazing photos from all corners of the world. we've spent hours on it and have barely scratched the great stuff to be seen. this is one fucking brilliant and passionate site!
we'll be checking in often and profiling some of their amazing stuff, starting with this one we loved by Thundercut...

from Wooster Collective: "A few months back we put up a series of photographs of some very clever and really fun remixed WALK / NO WALK signs by Thundercut... So this week we were very pleased to see that Thundercut is back out on the streets of New York... As you can see in the photo, the placement is fucking perfect as Thundercut's Rocker signs are at both ends of New York's famed CBGB's club. Really nice work."

up to our neck with face
sometimes when you become aware of a tag, it starts to follow you around. in the 24 hours since this post...
we spotted a possible Neckface snapped by great site PeaceDividend.com on a parking meter in Berkeley (that went up the same time as our post :-)
and a triple-whammy... posted on the Avalon Chrystie Bld last week, then last night we snapped the shot below of a strange Neckface tag attack on the same building, and just now caught that Curbed put up a nice juicy post on the Avalon Chrystie

it's hard to tell if either of the tags above are the real deal. an interesting cultural phenomenon is that Neckface and other graf tags get imitated/copied around the world. here's a killer
