HOT TIP for CityRag readers... many people emailed us that they enjoyed our coverage of the 2005 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in NYC this past winter (including an Anderson Cooper spotting) and that they were planning on hitting in it 2006. and we couldn't encourage you more, last year's show was one of the greatest NY events we've ever attended! so we're very excited to bring CityRag readers the scoop that tickets to the 2006 Westminster Dog Show GO ON SALE TOMORROW AT 10:00 A.M.!

Helping Animals Effected by Katrina

A reader sent us this note “perhaps you could link to a group that is helping abandoned/displaced animals in New Orleans? I have heard reports of people who left their pets behind (thinking they would come back to them). The animals that survived will surely need our help!” What a great idea, did some digging around and came up with this awesome group and info…

Noah's Wish - "a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission - keep animals alive during disasters" - is already on the scene and responding to this disaster! 10 members of their team arrived in the outlying areas of the disaster today and are working hard to organize and rescue animals. info and details on how to help can be found on their main page. donations can be made through their website!

- The most direct agency to help looks like the Mississippi Animal Rescue League is working to take in displaced animals. Their website isn't updated but they do accept donations.

devastating shots from Hurricane Katrina are building on Flickr. fortunately it seems that not many people ventured out to take photos first hand, like the one shown here taken near an air force base in Biloxi. but there are lots of extensive collections Flickr users have been putting together of the most stricking news photos. here's a shot of the eye taken from above the clouds, a strange contrast to the intense destruction left by the storm. our hearts and prayers go out to everyone effected.

"New York Changing" is a book of wondeful photos from around NY with a very interesting concept behind it. from the official website... "Douglas Levere Revisits Berenice Abbott’s New York - 50 pairs of photographs by contemporary photographer Douglas Levere and world-renown photographer Berenice Abbott. Abbott’s iconic photographs, drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, were taken in the 1930s and first published in her landmark book, Changing New York (1939). More than six decades later, Levere used the same camera Abbott had used and returned to the same locations at the same time of day and the same time of year." an exhibition of photos from the book can be seen at The Museum of the City of New York through November 13th.

Pershing Square's mysterious zoning

NYC can be very tight with commercial zoning. excessive fines are passed out for tables or signs outside that go an inch over the allowed space. but every summer Pershing Square Café, located on the very busy corner of 42nd St. and Park Ave., is allowed to SHUT DOWN and take over a block of Park Avenue and fill it with outside seating for their café. in doing this they block an important south bound Park Ave turn off of one of the busiest streets in the city! this baffles us to no end (adding to the insult, the place is often empty.) does anyone know the story behind this restaurant being allowed to take over a city street?

UPDATE: Venus Williams will be appearing in Pershing Square TODAY at 12:00! playing tennis for a good cause!

2 Big Macs have less fat than 1 Chipotle burrito!

FourFour has a killer post today exposing that a vegetarian Chipotle Burrito has 52 grams of fat and 1168 calories!! (just the veggie basics: beans, rice, cheese, guac, salsa, sour cream, and lettuce - not even any meat!) scroll down to see the details and calculator they used. Chipotle is part of the McDonalds corp, notorious for putting tons of bad stuff in their food to make it more addictive. Looks like they're doing the same at Chipotle, but that chain seems to be flying under the radar, for now. we hope the word gets around - 52 grams of fat and 1168 calories (and we usually get some meat in ours) is just not right. a Big Mac has 21.5 grams of fat and 485 calories in comparison. as much as it pains us, so long Chipotle!

Update: AllThingsChristie sent us a link the calculations she did on a Chipotle burrito a couple months ago - 83 grams of fat and 1784 calories... Holy shit: Chipotle Calculator

Update #2: a reader kindly sent us info that a Big Mac has 560 calories and 30 grams of fat. still more than twice as much fat as a Chipolte burrito with meat, but we wanted to correct the Big Mac info (Thanks Nick!) (image via Rachelleb)

there's a crazy story in the news this week that Sharon Osbourne may have been behind the staging of an assault on Iron Maiden during their last Ozzfest show. yesterday Iron Maiden's manager responded with this whack at Sharon...

"In 30 years in this business and after hundreds of gigs I have never seen anything anywhere near as disgusting and unprofessional as what went on that night. The scale, viciousness and concentration of the throwing made it obvious that this was a premeditated and coordinated attack. Perseid Meteor Shower peaks!
tonight is projected to be one of the peak nights for watching the 2005 Perseid Meteor Shower. "A very good shower will produce about one meteor per minute for a given observer under a dark country sky." Space.com has the complete information. moonset occurs at around 11:20 p.m. Since dawn doesn’t break until around 4:30 a.m., that means there will be about 5 hours of dark, moonless skies for one of the best viewing nights to catch the show!

free health fair in the LES today
The Lower East Side Family Union is having a free health Fair today! starting at 12:00, it's being held outside on the block of Stanton at Orchard. there will be blood pressure tests and other examinations available, and lots of educational health information. it's all free to the community and will be going on throughout the day.

NY produce is in peak season!
stands throughout NY state are filling up with delicious fresh produce this month. trailers stacked with corn, peaches and tomatoes are starting to line the roads. our favorite area for buying fresh off the farm is a strip of road right off the Taconic Pky in Columbia County. peaches are at their peak right now. and no offence to Georgia, there isn't a more flavorful, juicy, bright tasting peach on the planet.

if you can't make it upstate, there are tons of Farmers Market's throughout the city (including the Union Square Greenmarket) that feature wonderful NY state produce.
