the Gothamist reported last week that the NYPD may be scaling back small pot busts - halleluiah! we've been holding smoke-in's around the city for over a year now in protest of NYC's ridiculous waste of money aggressively hunting down small time joint busts - so this is music to our ears!

where to buy fireworks in NY
still have some stuff from last year, so we're not making a run. but as a public service announcement here's a guide to getting the best fireworks around NYC!...
with a car:
the BEST fireworks spot we've ever found (and we've hit dozens) is the Nitro Fireworks Outlet in Maryland. a straight 2 hour drive down the Jersey Turnpike. they have tons of fireworks from small to lots of big stuff, mortars and all and CHEAP prices. check out last years report with directions and tons of photos.
There are closer spots you can find through the Fireworksexpress.com the Connecticut spots sell only small stuff and at Pennsylvania stores the prices can be insanely high (beware of Phantom outlets 4 times as high as Nitro in Md. )
Without a car:
hit Chinatown this week. with the fireworks crackdown the street sellers are hard to find but they're out there. looks near heart of Chinatown on Mott and Canal, and also try the back street of CT and Little Italy, keep an eye out for:
1) a man or woman with a bag who drops it down on the street and sells stuff quickly then closes the bag and moves on
2) someone lurking in a doorway whispering "fireworks" they'll have a couple boxes inside the doorway filled with stuff they're selling
3) some shop owners sell fireworks - look for clandestine looking sales going on in shops behind counters, although they're very suspicious, they are looking to sell so if you play it cool they'll hook you up.

2 fabulous events rocked NYC this past weekend - Gay Pride Day and The Coney Island Mermaid Parade! some inbred bitch named Ronda Storms has been inadvertently stirring up gay pride in Tampa, Florida. seems she decided that gay pride celebrations should be banned. but of course her actions have backfired and people throughout the county of Hillsborough Florida (and across the country) are rallying to oppose her actions with lots of parades and events!

The furor started when county commissioner Ronda Storms complained about a gay author display at a local library which was taken down last week after the Hillsborough County Commission held a vote to ban the county's recognition of gay pride entirely. A gay pride march and rally are set for downtown Tampa this weekend."

Robert Redford's face lift, good or bad?
although he's still handsome, Robert Redford has been looking pretty wrinkled and haggard over the last decade. but in photos from this year's Sundance Film Festival and other recent events his face is MUCH smoother and less wrinkled than it's been in years! it looks like he's had some work done (a little eye lift, maybe a chemical peal), but Bob's looking great! so we were surprised to see that Joan Rivers has been slamming the work he had done. we put together a couple photos to show before and after and let you judge... Bob's lift, good or bad?...

our friend Janet took a tour of some of the cool Victorian houses in the Flatbush/South Prospect/Ditmas Park area of Brooklyn last week and sent us these great photos and notes...
"Most houses were built between 1900 – 1910, it had been farm land before that and was planned by two developers, who built the majority of the houses. Many families have restored the homes to their natural beauty with lots of detail. Victorian, Arts and Craft and Victorian Gothic – just incredible! The tour offered about 30 houses open to the public, with a tour guide. I had an opportunity to speak to some of the owners, many of whom had bought their homes in the 70’s and 80’s for $50,000 - $80,000"

tour is called The Flatbush Development Corp. There are several neighborhoods that were part of this tour even though it was probably a 20 block square radius. Ditmas was the family that owned the farmland in the 1800's.

- and we've even heard from readers... Gwin, who lived in one of the houses and filled us in that it was used as the main exterior for the movie "Sophie's Choice." and we also heard from Ari who grew up there and his grandfather helped build the house!

we're off on vacation this week, but there's some good stuff stacked to fire each day! we know what chu like... cool NY stuff, cute Buddy shots, photos, fun gossip observations, and a little crazy shit... so stay tuned!
Last Meal at HoJo's
the closing of the Howard Johnson's in Times Square has been in the news. according to the employees, there's no set close date yet, but we headed over grab one last meal with some friends in case it happens fast...
and it was great. same classic bright orange interior, moldy smell, slow service, and totally empty at lunch time. the food was actually really good. Clam strips were super crispy, chewy but still tender and a nice tangy flavor, with the classic Hojo's parker rolls, fresh cole slaw, great fries and a yummy chocolate malt on the side. a friend's western omelet was huge, fresh and tasty. just like we remembered (like lots of old school NY clubbers, we've hit Hojo's many times over the last 20 years.) the prices are ridiculous, total Times Square tourist rip off ($17.95 for the clam platter and $6 for the shake.) still all in all it was a fine lunch. gotta hit happy hour one more time before close.

Has anyone calculated the amount of free advertising Starbucks is getting from all the photos that make the rounds of today's hottest A-List celebrities holding tight to their cups?...
It has to be over a 100 million bucks - they're getting both free endorsements from the most expensive stars AND free placement as the photos make the rounds in the thousands of media outlets, from TV to magazines to websites. We spent a short time collecting photos from the past few months, and found more than we could possibly post... Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, Mary-Kate Olsen, Drew and Fabrizio, Jessica and Nick, Nicole and her DJ, Pamela Anderson, Macaulay, Jessica Alba, Renee Zellweger, Madonna!
It is possible they're paying for the exposure, but couldn't find any "official" endorsements, and it seems unlikely (just in terms of the tremendous money it would cost to get all these top stars.)
There's almost a cult thing going on as Britney Spears rushes into strip malls to get her fix and Mary-Kate Olsen clutches cups to her breast as if they were the sweet nectar of happiness. There's often Starbucks signage in the background. And we like Madonna's strategic placement of her cup at her side and in front of her at children's book readings. and the subliminally seduced is working!, these days when we see a picture of Brit we think "ummmmm Starbuuucks". WE ARE THE STARBUCKS CHILDREN!
