mmmm burgers
as we count down the hours until the Shake Shack reopens this coming Monday, it seems like a good time to follow-up on Epstein's Bar, the burger joint/bar that opened on the corner of Allen and Stanton a couple months ago. and we're happy to report Epstein's serves a dam good burger!...

Epburger

the meat is very flavorful and has that juicy, melt in your mouth quality. comes with nice pile of lettuce, tomato and onion (and fries.) AND they toast/brown the bun on the grill! (one of the secrets to an outstanding burger! a very important touch also done by Shack Shake.) the fries aren’t anything special and service there can be so-so (we usually order ahead and then pick em up to take out, while we walk Buddy) but the burgers are always great!

to the good life

Bes1

Bes2

here's a little of Bessie's great story from her wonderful owner Erika...
"I too have a formerly orphaned dog. Her name is Bessie and she is some kind of a corgi mix as well. She is such an amazing and strange dog. I found her when I was visiting a friend in Puerto Rico. She would have been euthanized there since she had contracted heartworm disease. Now she is cured, living with me in Brooklyn and being the nuttiest dog ever."

healthy insanity
more from the cool site rock on lock (that Tiger Lilly introduced us to.) this is freakin' fabulous!... some dam funny stuff that's had us laughing all morning. here's a couple of our favorites from 19 ways to maintain a healthy level of insanity...
- At Lunch Time, Sit In Your Parked Car With Sunglasses on and point Hair Dryer At Passing Cars. See If They Slow Down.
- Page Yourself Over The Intercom. Don't Disguise Your Voice.
- Put Decaf In The Coffee Maker For 3 Weeks. Once Everyone has Gotten Over Their Caffeine Addictions, Switch To Espresso.
- Sing Along At The Opera.
- Five Days In Advance, Tell Your Friends You Can't Attend Their Party Because You're Not In The Mood.
- When Leaving The Zoo, Start Running Towards The Parking lot, Yelling "Run For Your Lives, They're Loose!!"

and don't miss this!

hey K-Smokes - step away from the pregnant lady
while the world tries to figure out if Britney Spears is pregnant (and it's looking like a yes)... we'll jump ahead to the next question: is Kevin Federline going to make a good Dad?... and we gotta say, all signs point to NO...

Ksmoke

picked this idea up from LilLaaady of the JJB board, here's her sweet note: "I hope she's not pregnant if he's just going to smoke in front of her. Second hand smoke could be just as damaging for a baby."

check out PinksTheNewBlog for some great pics and commentary about Kev's recent trip to Vegas and what might be going on in this photo and the rest of the series (let's just say lots of apologizing.)

production companies love messin' with the locals

Lovem

seems like every week there's a new movie being filmed in our neighborhood. last week Lindsay Lohan's Just My Luck had many blocks well covered. caught a crazy rain scene being filmed while out walking Buddy. it can be kinda fun, but sometimes it sucks. like, we own a car and they take up all the parking! we try to take it all in stride but this pissed us off... flyers for the film Love Monkey, that are all over the LES today, say they're filming Thursday, 3/30. Um, today is 3/30 and it's Wed!! dam you production companies. it's bad enough you come in and take over the place, at least tell us the right fucking day! (and for anyone that wants to stalk the filming - we called and it's filming tomorrow 3/31)

demise of the LES: Pomeranc's Allen St. Fuckover begins
the Lower East Side has put up with a lot of crappy gentrification, but this seriously scares us. work has begun on a new hotel Jason Pomeranc is building on Allen St. (between Houston and Stanton)...

Allenh1

Allenh2

we read Curbed religiously to keep an eye on what's being developed in the LES, but had been turning a blind eye to this story. today it smacked us upside the head so we dug in, and what we found is very ugly. the articles below speaks for themselves, but the bottomline is: Jason Pomeranc is determined to change the landscape of our hood. if you care about or live in the LES or EV, these are must reads...

Good News for People Who Love Luxury Boutique Hotels

just when one may have feared the boutique hotel craze had peaked, comes word from Deborah Schoeneman that 60 Thompson owner Jason Pomeranc plans to open two new hotels next year, one at 6 Columbus Circle, and one on the Lower East Side. Of the LES hotel, which will feature 32 luxury condos, plus a spa, swimming pool, and all the other requisite trappings of hell, Pomeranc notes, "Allen Street is an overlooked and neglected frontier."

Pomeranc's Allen Street Hotel: Domination!

Perhaps nothing, though, will change the face of Allen like the proposed new hotel, still unnamed, which will tower over the street and certainly raise objections from those who frequently oppose out-of-scale projects... The hotel is also supposed to have bars, restaurants and an outdoor pool and will have two entrances, one on Orchard Street and the other on Allen, which Michael Pomeranc, the developer, calls a ''boulevard in the raw.''...

Hotels are replacing hipsters on changing Lower East Side

Jason Pomeranc was quoted last July as saying of the Thompson group’s 18-story plus project, “We were presented with the opportunity to not only impact the skyline but to begin creating it.” Whether or not other developers will follow suit in “creating” the Lower East Side skyline remains unknown, but depending on zoning restrictions, the look of the neighborhood could change drastically in the near future

Know Your Hoteliers, Part 4: Jason Pomeranc

The Hotness of Jason Pomeranc

Allenh3

it also looks to us like this building may be the real culprit that moved Kush and several other store fronts on Orchard St. a Curbed reader speculated that it was due to an apartment development, but the Allen St hotel demolition looks like it's breaking right through the block. and when we walked around to Orchard, the area that formerly housed Kush is EXACTLY behind the Allen St construction and has been recently boarded up (see Destruction on the LES: Where Will the Hipsters Play? )

Mister Gato is one of the coolest cats on the web. just look at that face, those love eyes, that nose, and the attitude. he's simply purrrr-fect! check out his Pop's site for some great candid shots and captions, and get to know this handsome little guy. he's got more personality than most people we know...

evil twins
A Socialites Life found this great photo of the Olsen twins, and made a clever comparison with the image of the evil twins in The Shining! The Shining Twins always reminded us the twins photo by Diane Arbus...

Twins

we like the Olsens, and Evil Twins are one of those reoccurring images that we fucking love, so this made us very happy. America's little sweethearts are getting twisted.

The Oh NO, Oh No No No, Fashion Show
here's an old idea of ours for a reality tv fashion show... a couple drag queens (or catty bitches, like us) ride around in a taxi cab and spot people making hideous fashion mistakes, and then make jokes about them and talk about what they're doing wrong. it's called the "Oh NO, Oh No No No, Fashion Show". today we saw this hilarious photo and caption on Tiger Lilly's site (that she found on Rock On Lock) and thought "now that's what we're talking about here!"...

"Oh no. Why would you even try this??? They look like talons or something. She could gut a fish with those things."

asian bloggers on tsumani watch
friend and reader Stef alerted us early this morning to this ongoing story: "another earthquake in Indonesia. Recommended course of action for Indian ocean coastal countries: evacuate." no Tsunami has developed as of yet but millions of people are waiting to see what happens.

watching the news on this story we became aware of the tremendous number of blogs and websites that have developed since December's tragedy. it's truly amazing, there are tons of bloggers (located in Asia) staying up into the night researching and posting info on the recent earthquake, evacuations and the area's status.

This is Not a Test has an excellent round up of links today that show the breadth and depth of blogs, websites, message boards, and communities devoted to providing up to the minute earthquake, weather and tsunami info. a truly impressive example of the way blogs are advancing the distribution and accessibility of important information around the world.

the subliminal subduction of Michael Jackson's armbands
we’re fascinated with the staple armband that Michael Jackson has worn every day to court since his trial began, and his never-ending supply of a new armband fashions. but after a couple weeks of watching this obvious symbolic statement, one has to ask… what the fuck is going on here? what message is he trying to send the jurors?...

Mjb1

Mjb2

Mjb3

a peak at basic armband symbolism yields some interesting answers:
1) most online dictionaries define an armband as: A band worn around the upper arm, often as identification or as a symbol of mourning or protest. a subset of this symbolism is often an element of memorializing innocent victims.

2) armbands are recognized around the world as a sign of safety and help. they’re commonly worn by medical personnel in the field, the most well known being the Red Cross armband. The Red Cross notes: “The familiar arm band symbol and Red Cross name tag signify someone you can trust, someone you can turn to.”

3) the 3rd most common use of the armband is to show prominence, leadership, achievement or honor – from Nazi and military/militia usages throughout history, to parade marshals, to the armbands worn by Thai boxers

Michael Jackson doesn’t wear armbands because he’s having fun with fashion. he’s wears this specific item of clothing every day of his trail because it carries strong psychological and cultural associations, and he's trying to subliminally convey to the jurors a message: protest of his victimization, and that he is a prominent person of honor that can be trusted.

(footnote: it feels good getting that out. it was starting to feel like we were part of some mass hypnosis that no one would say anything about those crazy armbands.)

UPDATE: in the news today: "Claiming an unnamed conspiracy against him, Michael Jackson said he is 'completely innocent'". also, a friend just phoned us that the free paper NY Metro also reflected today on MJ's armband wearing.

that’s the way we roll
never thought we’d say this, but… msnbc.com made our day! a producer named Will who explores blogland and journals his daily finds gave us a shout (a little down the page) for being one of the first sites to break Wooster’s Bansky story (as credited by our hero Kottke, 24 hours before the NY Times and other big coverage) and he also dug Mosh Girl.

but what rules is that he mentions what a great blog roll we have! Thanks man. dam straight! WE ROLL WITH THE BEST. CityRag lurves every single blog on our roll. it’s a little bit of everything, and we’re convinced everything fabulous in the world can be found somewhere in there (as we madly click and pursue each day :-) so to every blog on our roll –THANKS VERY MUCH for all your hard work and the great reading! ...and to prove msnbc knows what’s good – here’s some recent highlights off the roll:

cool little follow-up on the great story about the artist Bansky putting up his own works in 4 of NY's top museums... we were talking to our musician friend Joe about it and he told us he's been doing the same thing with his CD's for years! he goes into music stores around the city and leaves his CD's. files 'em himself into the correct genre, alphabetized and all. just for the fuck of it. even has his friends try and buy them once in a while. (and he credits a friend for the idea, maybe it's happening all over!) Dam, we love anarchist artists.

History, Ghosts and Cheap Beer - NY's 7th Regiment Armory
a few years ago our good friend Gail moved to the upper east side and invited some friends for drinks at a "hidden spot". intrigued, we meet her at the corner of 66th Street and Park Avenue in front of a massive and somewhat intimidating structure (taking up an entire city block) called the Seventh Regiment Armory. we didn't know much about the building at the time, except that it occasionally housed art and antique shows.

Armory_big

stepping up to the building's main doors, Gail tells the armed guards we're going to the restaurant and they allow us entry. it's hard to begin to describe the musty, forgotten treasure chest of artifacts you walk into. the articles below give a sense of the incredible architecture, art and antiques, and layers of history that surround you. but it's the creepiness, dim lighting and layers of dust that entrance us. torn flags from battle fields, huge paintings, and gothic iron work chandlers line the walls (they seem to only maintain one working/lit bulb per fixture.)

taking the elevator to the 4th floor, the doors open to a long hall set up as a bar that's straight out of a Knights of Columbus Hall; moose heads, funky furniture, a cool old bar. and clenching the deal - beer and drinks are super cheap!

Bar_hall

although wandering around the building is, ah, discouraged with weaponry, you can explore the very cool dining rooms. a few follow form with the bar and look like a wedding hall nightmare. but some, like the "Rumpus Room" have walls lined with art that should be in museums! like "Prison Art" going back to the 1700's (art created by American war prisoners.)

that first visit started a minor obsession with the building that's revealed some incredible info about this massive, historic, and strangely forgotten treasure. here's a good introdution from a conservancy partner...

"The building was completed in 1879 and contains interiors finished by such prominent designers as Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Herter Brothers. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission described the building’s magnificent rooms as “the single most important collection of 19th century interiors to survive intact in one building... In addition, the Armory’s 55,000 square-foot Drill Hall with 80-foot high barrel vaults was a marvel of engineering in its day and remains one of the largest unobstructed interiors in New York City."

Armory_room

but the most informative source out there is this excellent in-depth article from Magazine Antiques - The Seventh Regiment Armory in New York City - restoration of the historic site in New York. a must for NY history freaks, 4 pages packed with the building's history, architecture and design details!

some more info and links:
- photos of the interiors
- the Armory Restaurant's official site, several shots of the dining rooms (food is ok at best)
- it's disturbing how little we found on restoration being done to the building's structure or rooms. the most recent restoration information we found was from 2000.
- part of the 7th Reg Armory is a facility for homeless women

the Regiment has several independently run events throughout the year (charging around a $15 admission) but you don’t need to wait for an event, you can stop by during their evening hours, get a cheap beer, sit in a musty chair and soak in the atmosphere.

Bonus Link!: Forgotten NY has an excellent article with lots of awesome photos on another of our favorite places in NYC for history, ghosts and cheap beer - McSorley's!

the sacred vs. the profane
in 1988, controversial artist Jeff Koons created a monstrous ceramic of Micheal Jackson and Bubbles. it's fascinating reading about the work. although created prior to Jackson's last decade of accelerated strangeness, the art and notes about it cast an eerie commentary on his life and media image today.

Mjandbubbles2_2

from the Broad Art Foundation:

In a series of works he called "Banality", Koons creates sculptures of dimensions and details monstrous and absurd. These works, like Michael Jackson and Bubbles, demand attention by virtue of their size and seductive porcelain surfaces, yet they disturb as well. The dead white of Jackson's skin, his glamorous pose with Bubbles in matching clothing invites a chilling range of questions about celebrity and image making.

art critique:

Subject: Michael Jackson and Bubbles as part of the Banality show, gold polychromed statue that plays up a false aura or allure; kitsch and the Hyperreal; the sacred vs. the profane. Style: slick, shiny, seductive surface heightened for that hyperreal effect; turns the tradition of figurative sculpture into kitsch; false auras and the degraded sublime. Context: late capitalistic, consumer-oriented society in which values are in question; object-lust, but objects emptied of soul, vanitas imagery and the hyperreal; after so many plastic surgeries Michael Jackson was already hyperreal even before Jeff Koons got to him; cult of celebrity.

bonus irony - it's sale has an equally bizarre story, and hit shocking numbers...

Over the past few seasons, Koons's art has been escalating in value at auction and this lot has an ambitious estimate of $3,000,000 to $4,000,000. It sold for $5,615,750 including the buyer's premium.

Humane Society Seal Ralley today in Rock Center
all info below is from an email sent by The Humane Society of the United States: Humane Action Network Alert...

We want to be sure you know about the demonstration in New York City to protest the killing of many thousands of baby seals. Activists are stepping up the pressure against the Canadian government for the escalation of its commercial seal slaughter. Please attend the rally and contact the Canadian embassy to add your voice to the opposition.

The mass killing of harp seals, which targets weeks-old seal pups, has been reviled worldwide for its brutality. Sealers bludgeon young seals as they lie helpless on ice floes. Observers and scientists have noted that many of the animals are often still alive as they are skinned. Canadian government quotas have set the death toll at nearly a million seals over a three-year period.

Join The HSUS, Greenpeace, and other animal and environmental protection organizations in one of 50 cities around the world to protest Canada's seal slaughter!

What: Seal Hunt Protest

CityRag smoke-ins are all about taunting NYC's policy of aggresively hunting down and arresting people with incredibly small amounts of marijuana. and in doing this we often flirt with disaster. but this was a close one. just after we snapped this shot we noticed a cop 10 feet south of us watching traffic.

Bedazzling MP3’s
Moviecleopatrajones_1if you’re a fan of funky, obscure MP’s and videos check out Bedazzled. it’s hard to describe what you’ll find there... a little of everything cool, unusual and nostalgic…
- Out Of My Mind On Dope & Speed by Julian Cope
- I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun by Cat Stevens
- The Raspberries doing "Go All The Way" on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert
- the Mr. Machine TV Commercial.
- and a recent favorite, the AWESOME radio spot for the kick ass 1973 film Cleopatra Jones...

“She’s 6 foot 2 inches of Black beauty. She handles her car like a gun. She handles her gun like a man. And she handles a man like Cleopatra.”

Bush-o-nomics
every day we stumble on another great voice in blogland. this post by AngryBlackBitch kicks ass and takes names....

Bush-o-nomics
1. Make the tax cuts permanent even though they have not stimulated the economy or created jobs.
2. Overhaul Social Security by creating private accounts which will invest directly in the Stock Market, which is about as stable as a crack ho' jonesing for a fix.
3. Continue to fuck with Medicare, make it so complex that the old people will fall out dead from the stress thus reducing the dependent population.

...more Bush-o-nomics

I want my surplus back. I want Bill Clinton back. It feels like the inmates have taken over the asylum. And once they are done overhauling us into an "ownership society", they'll have created a society no one will want to own.

amen. we're feelin' you ABB.

New York City's dog friendly hotels
the New York Times has a cool article today on hotels in NYC that will let you bring your pets, and even offer special services like pet pampering programs and dog walking!...

Blankies

We'll Leave the Lights On, and a Milkbone
"Guests at the SoHo and TriBeCa Grand hotels are offered Pampered Pooches and Finicky Felines programs, providing special food, grooming and bedding."
"Loews has a special doorknob sign to alert housekeepers that there is a pet in the room. In addition, the chain asks for a cellphone number or provides guests with a "puppy pager" so that the hotel can contact them if there is a problem with a pet."
"...at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Central Park South, the loan of a Burberry raincoat if it happens to be raining when the need for a walk arises."
"The W Hotel at Union Square not only welcomes pets arriving with two-legged guests, but occasionally celebrates its connection with the animal world"

and we've found other great NY hotels allow dogs too!

more info on traveling to New York with your dog:
New York is a great place to bring your dog on vacation with you. most cabs will let dogs ride in the back (carry a towel for the seat if your dog cannot ride in your lap.) there are tons of dog runs and wonderful parks throughout the city to tour with your pup (you could spend 2 days just hitting Central Park and the west river!). some great shopping. and many outdoor cafes allow your dog to sit quietly by your side while you dine.

Jolie Helps Launch Center for Refugee Children
"The Oscar-winning actress came to the nation's capital Tuesday to promote a favorite cause: aiding refugees. She's given more than $3 million to the effort, including $500,000 to help bankroll an organization that will provide free legal aid to the thousands of children who arrive alone to the United States each year as refugees and immigrants."

renovating backwards
our good friend Janet sent over the note below about an apartment owned by a Victorian collecting maniac and his decked out co-op in Park Slope. crazy stuff. we love this idea... "Every fixture was changed back to something 100 years old."

Slopeapt

from our friend... "For those of us who love to collect things. I went to an open house in Windsor Terrace with a friend of mine on Sunday and saw the craziest place I have ever seen – just insane! Here’s a link to it. Victorian furniture, paneling, so much religious stuff and a dozen plus stained glass windows plus a full size stuffed peacock I mean just covering every inch on wall space. Every fixture was changed back to something 100 years old. Seems this man (in his 50’s) has just bought a big (you guessed it!) Victorian House in Maine and is moving. Its way overpriced and when I was there everyone who came thru just freaked! "

we think the place looks amazing. rich, warm and fun, almost hits that our childhood dream of living in a museum.

Nigel
we've received some great dog photos from people who read Buddy's page. like these sent to us of this adorable pup named Nigel. from his lovely owner... here's "my little guy, also a chihuahua mx (w/ jack russell we think), and also adopted from the CACC. I hope people see your pics and realize what beautiful dogs can be found in shelters."

Nigel2_copy

Nigel3_copy

does this little guy have "the life" now or what! his Mom has a great website called HelpShelterPets that's driving us crazy with the cutest photos of dogs in hand knit blankets!! (and handsome Nigel has his own page)

NYC's main animal shelter is the CACC (they seem to have recently changed their name to AC&C ?) they desperately need donations and people who want to adopt dogs and cats. in "2003, over 50,000 animals passed through the doors of AC&C facilities". please visit their site and do what ever help you can to help.

this is probably a good time to mention that we're addicted to the fabulous Gawker Stalker updates, the best celeb stalking in NYC!

24 days until the Shake Shack reopens!
UPDATE - Shake Shack has moved the opening date to Monday, April 4th!

one of the biggest culinary events to hit New York last year was the opening of Danny Meyers Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, and for good reason! PERFECT burgers, tender, juicy and full of flavor; served on a soft bun with crisp lettuce, fresh tomato and special sauce. the BEST BURGER IN NYC! they also have excellent hotdogs, great shakes and some very tasty fries (that you can get with their wonderful cheese sauce.)

Shake1

put this together with the lovely park atmosphere the Shack is nestled in, with lots of trees, benches and a great area with tables and chairs... and you have one slamming New York meal! (and why we found ourselves jumping on the R train once a week to hit it during lunch.) which is what we would have loved to do on a gorgeous day like today, so here's CityRag's inside scoop on the Shake Shack's Reopening!...

called Danny Meyer's management company (everyone we spoke to was very helpful) and were directed to a woman in operations. she told us that... the Shake Shack will reopen on Friday, April 1st! for the first month they will only be open for lunch (11-4). then around May 1st they will extend to full hours (which they anticipate being 11-10.) she also told us there won't be any menu changes right now, just the same great stuff, and pointed us to the Shack Shake's Official Site - that has the shack's full menu and some great photos. man, we can't wait! 24 days and counting...

and it was all yellow
been watching the construction of 195 Bowery out our window for a couple years now. not sure what it means in terms of progress, but the bright yellow walls are visible from anywhere in the area these days. did a little digging around and found these great photos on the cool site ThomasLockeHobbs.com. they really show the building's looming size and it's contrast against the LES architecture and traditional tenements.

195bow

also found a listing for a 3 bedroom, 1800 square ft condo in the building for a cool $1.5 mil. - "sweeping views thru walls of windows, private terraces and balconies, magnificent Italian kitchens and sumptuous baths. Set in NYC's most vibrant neighborhood, 195 Bowery raises luxury to a new level downtown."

dam, the hood is changing fast. having lived down here for 18 years, it's a strange and striking juxtaposition watching these very expensive and modern residences invade the area.
(thanks for the note Big O!)

the perfect storm
these photo's Spinach Dip took of this Monday's storm capture a snowy evening in the Lower East Side perfectly. love the lighting, simplicity and New York feel...

celebrities smoking weed
some cute photos of Aaron Carter smoking it up with friends have been making the rounds this week (snagged these from PinkistheNewBlog that will rock your world)...

we're seriously developing a fetish for pot loving stars:
- Lindsay "the blunster" Lohan (Lohan: "I've Tried Pot")
- Arnold Schwarzenhuffer
- and we know Paris Hilton loves da chronic and drives around with a blunt in her ashtray!!

did a little googling and came up with some more...
- this site has an excellent, HUGE list of famous people throughout time who have smoked pot. as does The Hemp Files.
- on Friends of Cannabis we found lots of juicy gossip on stars that enjoy a nice smoke... Jennifer Aniston: "I enjoy it once in a while".
- and Cannabis Culture has a huge series of ar
