happy again
couple weeks ago we noted a new store called Happy Happy Happy featuring dairy-free and gluten-free desserts and baked goods opening on Allen Street. yesterday we checked them out, and we're happy to report their desserts are DELICIOUS! we should preface this by saying we've never sought out gluten free desserts and were a bit skeptical about how they would taste - but they are WONDERFUL. we tried their homemade vanilla almond cake, mini chocolate cupcake (both pictured), and madelines. all were delicate, moist and rich in flavor. the vanilla almond cakes were especially heavenly with almost a marzipan like quality. they're just getting started and the assortment is a bit limited, but everything we tried so far was really yummy and well made. looking forward to more.

damage and grief
all over the news today is the tragic story of the killing of Dimebag Darrell and 3 others at a Damageplan show last night in Columbus, Oh. all reports are that Dimebag Darrell was a great guy in addition to being a legendary Metal musician. it's an incredibly sad story. but it really hit us as we walked to work through Times Square today and caught this touching and moving scene as this young man stood holding his sign up to traffic hoping for a connection with other grieving fans...

we stopped to exchange a few words and "he lives on" moment. the kid was very cool. we wished him the best, as we walked away he went back to his post. fucking love this city man.

War of the Worlds filming outside NYC
love Spielberg and Sci-Fi - so we've been psyched about his remake of War of The Worlds (a 1953 classic where the earth is invaded by beings from Mars.) this weekend in Athens, NY (2 hours upstate) we stumbled on the filming of a big scene!

the production itself actually had a feeling of a horror film, literally taking over the entire town with the perimeters locked down and barricaded by every cop in the county. we had to drive around and break in to pick up our laundry and snapped a couple quick photos. learned the scene being filmed here is an alien attack where people run through the town and to a ferry at the river (a huge ferry was brought in that we could see at the water front) over 1000 local residents are extras in the film. cool stuff. we'll stop back this weekend and try and get closer.

It Must Be Put Back!
this story in the Gothamist today floored us. a construction company has removed the nest that has been the home of Pale Male, his babies and other world reknowned and beloved red tailed hawks for over 11 years from the 5th Avenue apartment building where it resided. there's a wonderful website devoted to recording the birds history, that has taken up the cause to have the nest returned. check out Pale Male's story and the beautiful photos, and stay tuned to the site for calls to action to help the cause. it's so amazing these great birds would even nest in our city - we should consider it a blessing!

Donald Trump launches his new cologne.

we think his next cosmetic venture should be a craggily-chin reduction cream

good ‘n cheap Indian food
for decades E 6th, and the areas around 1st and 2nd Aves at either ends have been packed with cheap Indian restaurants. over the years we’ve had our favorites, and recently some new places like Angon on 6th, Banjara and Bricklane have brought some nice higher fare to the area. but for our money the best place in the strip is Indian Curry Mahal. it’s kind of a down and dirty place. we mostly get delivery, but the food is very good and super cheap! the flavors are rich, chicken is very tender, servings are insanely generous, breads homemade, and the food is never overly greasy.

this order consists of Papadam and Vegatable Samosas appetizers; Cheese Poori and Onion Kulcha bread; Chana Saag and Chicken Tikka Masala entrées; plus raita sauce and a bunch of free condiments, rice and dahl. the order was $20.05 with tax (not tip) and we had to throw out food after 2 full dinners (for 2 people plus Buddy’s share)
