flower glory
a lovely person has been writing us about Adam Purple and her own circular garden created in his honor "finally have fragrant, night blooming moon flower vines, in bloom, and morning glories blooming. Hummingbirds are dive bombing each other around the feeder". her note inspired us to put up some pics of these florescent morning glories overtaking our porch upstate...

thigh guy made us cry, and other friday links
His Royal Thighness is our main go to guy for juicy and hilarious commentary on all kinds of media punditry. but he caught us with a hook punch this week with his incredible piece about hanging out with his niece last weekend. funny, real and touching stuff. someone should hire this guy to write full time.

and then later in the week he goes and posts this heartbreaking video of “the most amazing dog you’ll ever see

a reader was inspired to start her own blog and sent us a link to some cool kick off content. clicked a link on her site and stumbled on this amazing story a called “Allow Us to Detain You” that was written by a guy who was detained by police this past Wednesday for taking pictures of the CitiCorp building. it’s a CRAZY story! (and nicely written, with his blow by blow conversation with the cops, including their commentary on his photos as they looked through his camera!)

good post on NYC Blogger called Get Out of Town about Phoenicia, a cool little town in the Catskills that we also love and recommend.

growing up in NYC we’ve seen RIP murals all our life (there’s been a bunch over the years around the EV and LES) - Metro Plus has excellent photos that capture the style and intense passion of a series in the Bronx.

sign of the times
a scene we’d love to see more of in NYC!... recently spotted some healthy looking weed budding on top of an air conditioner in the LES. this, and the low flying police helicopters upstate, reminded us that east coast harvest season is around the corner!

new LES bar
caught this tip in the weekly email from Nichelle Newsletter
“I heard about the new bar opening on Essex called Boss Tweed's Saloon and I initially rolled my eyes in disgust. Oh no, not another hipster bar opening on the Lower East Side!... However, I heard today that there is an outdoor beer garden, and I have quickly changed my tune.”

love a good beer garden! checked out their site and found some more juicy news… $2 Buds and Rheingolds ALL DAY!! (and it looks like they’ll have food.) we’ll be checking this one out…

Update: haven't checked it out yet, but reader C. kindly sent this in...
"walked by there tonight, out with the boyfriend and his best friend, in from long island. (keep this in mind, long island)... it was really, really bad. they were blasting bon jovi really, really loud. plus it was too
bright and way empty. didn't go in to see the beer garden though so maybe that makes up for it, but it wouldn't necessarily help the bon jovi factor. it was a good thought though, there, for a minute. and it could improve." reader feedback ROCKS (and saves us some time) thanks C.!

purple MF’s
conversation in a bar a couple weeks ago…
Us (to cute girl who’s been looking over): “I’m trying to figure out where I know you from?”
Girl: “hey, I used to be at your night at Babyland all the time. I was just telling my friends – ‘I think that’s a bartender I used to know’”
Us: “oh yeah! didn’t you and me and like 5 other girls make out one night? ”
Girl: "I don't think that was me"
Us: “they all went home and had an orgy”
Girl: “dam, I missed that. I did dance topless on the bar a couple times with a bunch of girls. and I remember you used to make these great shots – purple mother-fuckers”

good reminiscences of Babes in Babyland, purplemfthe Girl Party we threw at Babyland Bar in the 90’s... the party was INSANE. lots of dancing, late nights, hot women and sex. our boy Pete wanted the bar back job, so the trade off was that he had to wear a leather diaper and baby bonnet. turns out the girl we were talking to, Terri, has a cool band these days Triple Crème.

coincidentally, at the Dark Room opening we ran into 2 people who used to hang at another place we bartended, NoTell Motel, and they mentioned the Purple Mother-Fuckers. an excellent summer party drink/shot - a smooth Grape Kool-Aid effect for your light weight friends, but made with quality stuff for drinks snobs...
crushed ice, double shot of good vodka, splash of Chambord, and fresh squeezed lemon, shaken and served straight up. (1/4 lemon per serving, not too much Chambord or it will taste like cough syryp.) beautiful, refreshing and packs a punch!
