yes Virginia, there are great cheap eats in midtown
in honor of the NYTime's and Gothamist's recent coverage of Margon (in their "Heroes" reports) - thought we'd throw up a shot of our lunch from Margon yesterday...

Margon

Margon Restaurant has been a fave of ours for a while (and beloved and written about by knowing Chowhounds for years.) their Cuban sandwiches aren't the best around (go to Spanish American or Castillo De Jagua for the killer Cubanos in Manhattan) but they're dam good! a little on the small side, but well pressed and toasted, they use excellent thinly sliced, tart pickles, and they throw in a non-traditional touch of a couple slices for fried chorizo (like fried salami) that's very tasty! our trick is to order on Thursdays (the day after their roast pork lunch special) the pork is always super fresh that day. but what we really love at Margon is their perfect black beans! so flavorful and nicely saucy, served on white or yellow rice with some tasty tender slices of fried plantain on top (you get a huge amount and they're great the next day.) about $10 including tax.
