recipes for city kitchens: ny deli frittata
in NY, it can be difficult to find the ingredients for an easy, healthy meal close by; or a recipe that you can make in small apartment without a lot of cooking utensils. one of our favorite standby's is this quick frittata recipe, with the ingredients easily available at most NYC delis and bodegas... you'll need butter, bread, eggs, milk, cheese, and whatever vegetables you can scrounge up at the deli.

Fritatta3

set your oven to 375 degrees and...
1) butter a pie dish (or square pan about that size)
2) toast 1 piece of any kind of bread/roll, lightly butter it and then tear up into small pieces and scatter on bottom of pan (the bread absorbs some of the vegetable juices, helps it get nice and firm)
3) scatter layers of vegetables in pan to almost the top. we like: layer of grated zucchini, grated onion, torn up spinach, and chopped tomato. use whatever you like and is available, mushrooms, broccoli, left over chicken (sometimes it's onion, tomato, green pepper, cuz that's all they got.) 2 tricks to the veg part - squeeze most of the liquid out of the grated or chopped items before you add to the pan; and grating is much faster than chopping for vegetables like zuc, onions and peppers.
4) cut up a couple handfuls of the cheese (sharp cheddar and gruyere are awesome) and add to the top, push the chunks down into the vegetables a bit.
5) crack 10-12 eggs into a bowl (you can substitute egg whites for some or all of the eggs, but use more), add 4 tablespoons of milk, a bunch of salt and pepper and seasoning. seasoning can be crunched up herbs, a scoop of salsa, Italian dressing, hot sauce (reduce milk if you use something wet)
6) mix everything together and pour over top vegetables/cheese in dish. egg mix looks like a lot but once you start pouring almost all should fit!
7) stick in oven for about 30-45 min until it's firm through the middle (if it gets fully browned before it's firm, reduce heat to 350 degrees and cover lightly with foil) - let it cool a couple minutes, cut up and serve! (goes great with some fruit, toast, muffin, or even tortilla chips)

100 miles up the Hudson River
about 100 miles straight up the river, north of NYC, lies Olana, the magnificent estate of Hudson River School artist Frederick Church.

Olana1a

a friend of ours likes to say "the Hudson River School artists were the ROCK STARS of their time", as throughout the 1800's their highly romantic style and "use of light effects, to dramatically portray such elements as mist and sunsets" broke new ground and moved the nation. walking through the beautiful Olana woods last weekend to watch the sunset with friends, it was easy to see how these artists were inspired to create this moving style.

NY dog rescue: WaggyTail
WaggyTail Rescue is a wonderful organization, similar to the one we got Buddy from. they go into NY "kill" shelters, pick out dogs (and cats!), post them on Petfinder.org and foster them in volunteer apartments around the city until they get adopted into loving homes.

WaggyTail is currently listing several ADORABLE small dogs... a Chihuahua/Corgi mix named Wilbur, who's insanely cute (looks like a black version of Buddy.) Cookie, the sweetest thing we've ever seen, with a story that will break your heart.

Wag1

Jackie Chan looks like such a funny and loving dog. and little Rocco is a wiggly, snuggly, nuzzler.

Wag2

we want them all! if you're thinking about adopting a shelter/rescue dog and want to talk to someone who's been through it, send us an email. words cannot describe what a rewarding, loving and beautiful experience it's been for us.

if you want to help but can't make a long term commitment to a pet, you can foster an animal or volunteer, donate something needed on their wish list, or make a donation, they need every penny.

and on WaggyTail's site we discovered a great way to help non-profit orgs. iGive.com lists a ton of big online retailers and when you buy from them through iGive's website, a percentage of your sale goes to your favorite charity. and it's not small change, there are some significant percentages and bonuses being paid (right now ther's an additional $5 bonus.) we're planning on doing all our online holiday shopping through their site!

voter reg scavenger hunt!
CityRag has a challenge for you - find one person who is not registered to vote, have an informative and passionate conversation with them, and get them to register and participate in this years election! bonus points for nailing down someone in a swing state!

and just in time Kottke.org has put together an excellent Voters Information Guide for the 2004 US Election that has every possible link and bit of information on how and where to register.

in response to our "mom" post yesterday....
our friend NO sent this in... "nice work getting your mom to vote! i got the confirmation from my mom over the weekend that she and my dad are totally kerry supporters..."

and Gail sent us these inspiring words... "Miracles do happen! You CAN get people to THINK and change... my Mom and I are going to watch the Thursday debate together so I can simplify and explain stuff to her. She even asked me to make sure that she would be taken to the polls to vote" (Gail's mom just turned 80 :-)

fair fight
at the Demolition Derby a couple weeks ago we watched this fight go down... the stands and grounds were packed and people started congregating on the stairway landing to watch the show, blocking the view a bit for the people in the first rows. this drunk, red faced, jerk starts screaming obscenities and threats at the people standing. they don't respond, so he takes his plate full pizza and full soda and THROWS IT ALL at the backs of the kids and adults standing! the people are all like "what the fuck?!", and a short round woman (with her arm in a sling) runs over and freaks out on the dude...

Fairfight1

he then stands up and TAKES A SWING at the woman in the SLING! and she ducks backwards like a prize fighter! at this point her husband runs over and tells them BOTH to stop the craziness. he gets right up in the assaulting drunk guy's face and chills him out! it was miraculous!!

Fairfight2

we talked to the woman's husband after the derby and asked him "how did you control yourself?" and he told us the fight starter was "drunk off his ass and had his kids on both sides of him" (the f'ing coward) and he didn't want to throw it down "in front of his kids". Lesson: even if a guy takes a swing at your wife, you're not going to win by beating him up in front of his kids.

my mom is voting for Kerry!
wow, just got the most amazing call. continuing the goal to sway swing-stater's... this weekend we braved the "who are you voting for" conversation with Mom. she's a registered Republican, but it's the devout Catholic angle that's made it very difficult to approach the subject with her. she usually tenses up, tells us she has to go by her beliefs and leaves the room quickly. this weekend we sat her down, and gently and deeply explained the disastrous state of our country - from the war, to economics, to healthcare. and also talked in depth about how Bush has so greatly increased the passionate loathing of the US by terrorists, and that our country has never been more hated and targeted than it is today (and the daily fear we live in working in Times Square)

5 minutes ago our Mom (who's an incredibly sweet and sincere person) called and said she has being thinking about what we said and she wants us to know she is going to vote for Kerry!

it was such an incredibly encouraging moment. providing information and having conversations with even the most "stuck-in-their-ways" people can make a difference. gotta admit, we've been going for the easier sells. but my mom's call today has convinced us that ANYONE can be brought to see the destruction Bush is inflicting on our nation!

Rides of Passage and Burton Snowboard Tour hit NYC
"snowboarding, tattooing and art collide"... last week we covered the Woodstock Tattoo Festival, and the spectacular Rides of Passage exhibit featuring 120 Burton Snowboards painted by some of the world's best tattoo artists. here's a small sample of the amazing work...

Tatboardsjpg4

in Prick Magazine we learned that the show will now travel with the "Burton World Tour in Tokyo, LA, NYC, Innsbruck, Zurich, and wrap up in Burlington, VT., where the exhibit will be documented and find a final resting place in a beautiful book". so checked out the Burton website and discovered that the Burton World Tour is scheduled to hit New York City next week with the Rides of Passage Exhibit on display and open to the public!

here's where you can see this massive, brilliant exhibit...

Jason Kottke is our Hero of the Week. check out his excellent post I need your help getting the word out regarding the US presidential elections. the Gothamist is also reminding people to register to vote!

and earlier in the week, Kottke.org provided the thrill of the day with this mind-blowing video of a guy surfing the biggest wave you've ever seen.

from his Royal Thighness (Thighs Wide Shut)... this site has kept us laughing all week, maybe it gets old the 100th time or something, but still killing us after about 20 visits.

Joey of the Cities (Tale of Two Cities) put up this kick-ass info on CMJ shows, and then posted (from a friend or reader?) this hilarious and informative review of the bands that performed at the Austin City Limits festival

Feddy's a pot head! well call us a Federling! (from our Sociallite Life heartthrob)

used to spend hours crusin' the photo sites for funny shots of celebs having bad dress/make-up/hair/face days - but now we just go here (Go Fug Yourself)

our friend NO has a way with gettin hot boys to strip... his site NYCguys.com has been updated with some crazy naked photos of new york guys. we especially love the shots of this hottie playing ball in Dumbo. and on his site we found AllAmericanStraightBoys.com another site with sexy amatuers strippin' fo cash (*both sites have naked mens - not work safe)

illegal band promotion
other than trumped up protester charges, haven't heard much about people getting busted for postering/flyering in NYC for a while. busting people for putting up posters to promote their band used to be frequent cop active around town (lots of band members were arrested back in the 80's & 90's) but these days we're wondering if the "poster police" squad is still active.

these posterboys have the covert-flyer-operation down... from right to left - the "holder", the "gluer", and the "look-out"...

delicious, cheap and fast delivery: Rice
amidst the abundance of great food delivery in New York, Rice on Mott Street is one of our all-time favorites. here's the scoop on why they rock the delivery scene...
1) delicious food - well made, fresh and flavorful
2) interesting variety of options, all very inexpensive
3) huge delivery range - 6th Ave to Ave A, 8th St to Canal St
4) your address/info is kept in their computer, so you don't need to give it every time you call
5) great packing, always comes with complete assortment of accessories and free ginger candies

Rice

recommended items:
- Vegetarian meatballs $4- wonderful tender tofu meatballs with a flavorful chili sauce (shown in pic)
- Chicken Satay $5 - lots of grilled chicken and a rich nut sauce
- Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wings $4.50 - served with a salsa fresca, their wings are always super tender and nicely browned (shown in pic)
- Indian Chicken Curry $6 - with lots of chicken, raisins, mushrooms, topped with fresh banana and yogurt, and served with their homemade mango chutney (shown in pic)

with each entree you select the rice you want (basmati, brown, Thai black, sticky.) and they have a wonderful selection of specialty rice (rice and peas, green rice) for an extra .50 cents - the Thai black with edamame is excellent, PACKED with edamame. there's also some nice salads, soups, noodle dishes, and an interesting and wide selection of homemade sauces, dressings and chutneys adding more flavors and variety. and for dessert they have the classic rice crispy treat (with cranberry or apricot bits) 4 big disks in a cool package for only $4. they have a sweet little restaurant so you can eat there. but yo, this is all about their GREAT delivery service!

tattoo festival highlights
stormy weather lowered the attendance a bit, but we still had a fabulous time last Saturday at the Woodstock Tattoo Festival. highlights: watching beautiful tattoos being done by some of the worlds top tattoo artists, seeing great bands in cool venues, and of course, drinkin, druggin, and partying all night with a bunch of friends.

Tatcon1

but our favorite part was touring through all the amazing art exhibits! most tattoo artists are also incredibly skilled graphic artists, illustrators and painters. in addition to specific locations devoted to art exhibits, throughout the festival fantastic art is displayed on the walls of every venue. so many brilliant, intense, moving and thought provoking pieces...

Tatcon2

next week we'll be putting up more photos from our favorite exhibit: Rides of Passage "featuring 120 BURTON Snowboards painted, mangled, mauled, distorted, or made pretty by some of the world's finest tattooists"

How to Swing pt. 1
as we reported last week - Swing States are the key to John Kerry winning the election. in some states the margin is so close - a few hundred votes could tip the scale.
Defeatbush_1

Zogby Poll for WSJ Shows Kerry Solidifying Lead in 11 of 16 Battleground States

Ideas on how to get the word to people who can make a critical impact in their state:
- think of friends or family you know in these states and ask them to tell everyone they know that THEIR VOTES COULD DETERMINE THE ELECTION
- think of friends and coworkers you know here in New York who are from these states, give them the scoop and encourage them to contact their friends or family and let them know we need their votes
- spread the word on your website

For more ideas, here's some ways we've spread the word in the last few days:
- emailed a friend who lives and works as a park ranger in New Mexico, sent her some links on how critical her state is and asked her to forward to everyone she knows, and spread the word
- talked to my girlfriend about ways we could approach her friends and family in Michigan. then remembered I work with a cool woman from Michigan and sent her an email.
- talked to a friend who went to school in Seattle. gave him the scoop, and asked him to bug his old homies out there.
- emailed a reader who'd mentioned she lived in Va.

every person we spoke to was unaware their state was a swing state, and PSYCHED to get the info and be able to pass it along!! So don’t be shy... YOUR HELP CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in our future!

media consensus of the core group of 17 states: Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin, with these as the top 10: Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

An excellent organization, ReDefeatBush.com, has a drive on their site to get volunteers to call voters in Swing States - ReDefeat Bush: Volunteer. And if you can't participate in organized callings - there's a page that tells you how to do it on your own.

donut and coffee shop opening in the LES!
last week we caught this awning for a new store front, Sun Shine Cafe, at the corner of Allen and Houston. today we peeked in the window and found a work permit that notes the new place will be a take-out “donut coffee shop”. woohoo - right on the way for people who jump on the F Train at the 2nd Ave stop-Allen/Houston entrance! and the Chinese characters give us hope there might even be some killer crullers and egg custard tarts! Guide to Banh Mi in NYC
Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) have been around New York for a while, and for those who know where to find them, they’re a secret source for one of the cheapest and most delicious foods in the city!

Banhmi3_2

if you don’t know what Banh Mi are, they’re these amazing, one of a kind sandwiches, that are huge, made with all kinds of tasty fresh ingredients (French bread, shredded carrots, radish, slices of cucumber, lunch meat, bbq pork and a variety of sauces/seasoning) and are super cheap! usually around $3 for a massive sandwich that can feed 2.

our all time favorite is Saigon Banh Mi. high quality ingrediants and great care go into making each of their incredibly tasty sandwiches. opened over 15 years ago by Nina and her mother, Nina’s mother has retired and she now runs it with her husband Kevin (the nicest people you could ever meet). they toast each beautiful loaf of bread to order, and load on the fresh vegetables, meats and sauces. there are only 2 items on the menu! delicious, strong and sweet iced coffee and one kind of bahn mi/sandwich (the traditional version) but they will happily make an all Veggie version (or all pork) if you ask. their BBQ pork is so tasty and nicely crispy, hands down the best around. another reason they edge out the rest.

Banhmi2

part of the fun of Saigon Banh Mi is it’s almost secret location in a forgotten part of Manhattan, on the outside of the E. Broadway Mall where Forsythe, Division and East Broadway meet (stall #108 on the Forsythe St side, right behind the strip of lined up buses). Saigon Banh Mi is open Tuesday-Sunday. They open early in the morn and close late afternoon or when they run out of the days bread (which happens often so best to go before noon.) another tip – if you stroll down Market St you’ll find some nice ball fields with bleachers where you can eat your sandwich and watch some local ball on the weekend.

Banhmi1

there are many other banh mi shops around NYC. Chowhound and Epinions are great sources of info. another favorite of ours is Banh Mi So. 1 on Broome near Mott. they’re a little easier to get to, and have a good selection of funky little sweet and savory Vietnamese side dishes to try (and are also very nice people)

and a cool new addition! Lesevil spotted a Banh Mi shop, Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches opening on 105 E 2nd St, just off Ave A. and there’s a post today on Chowhound that they’ve opened and have good stuff. We’re there!

more great info on banh mi can be found here and here. and for an authentic lowdown, check out the excellent Vietnamese food blog - Noodle Pie

“Kings of Graffiti”
a new documentary from Doug Pray the director of the wonderful movie “Scratch” is Clawpawcurrently being filmed in New York City. “Kings of Graffiti” is about the art and lives of seven notorious graffiti writers. from the inside info we got, this looks like an amazing documentary that promises to capture the real feel of the graffiti scene and people who live and breathe it, something that’s yet to be done. as we get more info, we’ll keep you updated on the movie's filming and release.

punk rock, tattoos and hot rods
this coming weekend is the annual Woodstock Tattoo and Body Arts Festival. Tattoofestival_1 despite poor recall due to several illegal substances consumed – we can vouch that last year's festival was a KILLER TIME! the festival (and the rocker, punk, tattoo freaks who attend) take over the town. shops and cafes are packed with some of the worlds best tattoo artists. you can grab a tat or watch some of the mind-blowing work being done. there’s also a "country fair" atmosphere with funny hippie stuff, t-shirts, tasty food and alcohol being sold around town. and the bars and performance spaces are stacked with line-ups of great bands (like legendary NY hardcore and punk band Murphy's Law, and the kick-ass chick fronted metal band Grounded). $18 gets you into every show and venue for the day. we go early check out all the fun stuff, watch some tattooing, see friends, eat and drink, and then bounce around checking out bands and partying into the night.

AND as luck would have it, the same weekend, right across the river in Rhinebeck is the massive east coast Hot Rod and Classic Car Show, featuring over 1,500 rods, customs, classics & muscle cars. This show is fantastic, the cars are so fucking hot! a nice way to wind down on Sunday afternoon.

it's PhotoFriday, yay!
we're addicted to the incredible diversity and accessibility of photographic art on the net. there are thousands of beautiful, moving and creative photo sites out there, and they’re growing daily. from massive sites like Fotolog to Typepad, it’s becoming difficult to simply jump in and find something new.

so when we spotted PhotoFriday a couple weeks ago (on WhatISee, a site we like), it’s clean, simple and lightly focused style quickly drew us in! each week a topic is posted and anyone can post their photographic interpretation (part of what we love about PhotoFriday is that there aren’t a ton of rules) different topics get different levels of response but there’s usually several hundred. it would be hard to get through them all each week, but we don’t even try. just a few random clicks will yield plenty of interesting and diverse photo sites to look through. click on "linkviewer" for super easy browsing (and the noteworthy section directs you to some of the best.) and entering your own photo adds another way to have fun! here's our shot for this weeks topic "Blossom" -

crash this party
Levi’s is having a private street party tonight (something to do with fashion week and a launch), smack in the center of Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton, and taking up the entire block (at least this is what the guys setting it up told us.) we don’t have the scoop on when this party starts or what it will offer, but there were like 10 port-o-sans set up and lots of tents, plants and stuff being brought in this morning.

Leviparty_2

if it looks good, we have some ideas for you on how to crash it. tell the door people:
- you work on the block and need to get through
- you live on the block and will throw water balloons out your window if they don't let you in
- you work for Content Party Rentals (that’s the name of the company setting up the tents and stuff) and are delivering a part, or bringing the manager his back-up cell phone battery or something…
- you work for A Royal Flush (the company providing the port-o-sans) and someone reported leaking port-o-san (our personal favorite)

we also did a little web snooping and found this cool event happening Sunday on the block: The 3rd Annual Stores A GoGo - The Only Downtown Fashion Week alternative to Bryant Park + the only shows open to the Public + Press.

“On Sunday, September 12, at 1 PM, outdoors on Orchard Street @ Stanton, THIRTY of the most talented rated next L.E.S. designers will present, during Fashion Week, their Fall 2004 and Spring 2005 Collections in a fashion forward afternoon of runway shows (at 2 PM and 4PM), dj Girlina, cuisine from neighborhood restaurants, art, shopping, and after parties. “

demo derby decadence
photos from the Columbia County Fair last weekend, including 4 spectacular rounds of Demolition Derby (women won 2 of the 4 derbies) bright colored cars with crazy slogans, tons of excellent crashing and crunching, a burst gas tank and fire, fights in the stands (more on that next week) - it was insanely FUN!

RNC's preaching podiums
Bush laughs in the face of seperation of church and state! crosspodiumhis mission is to make everyone in America a Christian. on Meet the Press this past weekend Maureen Dowd commented on the “crosses” in the RNC podiums. even the RNC podium was set up as an evangelical pulpit! If you didn’t catch it (like us) check out the photo to the right!

Maureen Dowd is a brilliant, witty and though provoking writer. she really knows how to dig out the insanity, corruption and lies in the Republican propaganda…

Amnesia in the Garden
“The $445 billion deficit? Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney erased it. In their inside-out universe, the economy is blossoming, there's money to pay for Mr. Bush's to-do list and No Child Left Behind is more than an empty slogan. "... "Inside Madison Square Garden, W. kept insisting he'd made the world safer. Outside, the exploding world didn't seem safe at all.”

Cutups and Cutthroats
"Highly scripted screwball moments designed to soothe fears that the Bushies are bullies alternate with high-octane, turbo moments designed to stir up fears that we won't be safe without the Bush bullies.”

to punish and intimidate
last week the NYPD’s motto of “to protect and serve” seemed more like “to punish and intimidate”. the NYCLU has been doing a great job following the biased and unjust actions the city enacted on the protesters last week, and concluded police used "practices that punish and intimidate people for exercising their right to dissent". in NYCLU Grades Policing Of Protesters At The RNC they cover the horrendous tactics used by the NYPD:

“The NYCLU has received reports from members of the press, legal observers, medics and even passersby who found themselves caught in the Spiderman-type orange mesh netting the police used to make arrests.”

“police suddenly charged into the crowd with metal barricades and a squad of plain clothes officers later drove their scooters into the crowd. Some arrestees and bystanders reported being kicked, punched or hit with batons by police.”

“Having announced for months that it was prepared to handle over 1000 arrests a day during the RNC, the City chose to detain arrestees in this dank, filthy bus depot where people had to sit or lie on the floor covered with soot and quite possibly toxic automotive fluids.”

why do you think they call it "weed"?
spotted this little plant, that’s gone to seed, in a random open spot. cannabis is incredibly resilient. the thrown away seeds can unintentionally cause an illegal “crop” to pop up anywhere.

st marks smokin'
normally we avoid this block, but in the spirit of the smoke-in we had ta do it. a tourist actually stopped us and asked if we knew where he could buy some weed! we couldn't hook him up with the purchase, but the guy got on his knees when we handed him the rest of our joint (hey, we know the feeling dude)

Indian Larry rides off

larry

Such sad news this week that Indian Larry had died after performing a motorcycle stunt last weekend. Indian Larry was a GREAT man, an artist, innovator and all-around cool dude. and between his studio in Williamsburg and his home in the East Village he was a New York homeboy. in addition to his passion for metal sculpture and building bikes, Larry's honest and edgy style brought him several TV appearances over the years, including a regular stint on the Discovery Channel. his episode of The Great Biker Build Off is scheduled to run several times this month. we’d had the pleasure of meeting Larry and his beautiful wife Bambi several times over the years, and behind his tough exterior he was a funny and sweet guy. deepest condolences to his wife Bambi, family and friends. the world will miss his vibrant and unique spirit.

Photoblogger's groundbreaking coverage of RNC Protests
we knew this would be an exciting week, but underestimated the depth of eye opening coverage Photobloggers would bring to the masses. it’s hard to keep up with all the incredibly beautiful, moving and historically revealing photos that are being posted daily. photobloggers are out there in mass capturing every moment and proverbial angle. their shots reveal the true level of anti-Bush passion going on in New York right now, and the extreme diversity in the groups, causes, and people that have come here from around the country to be involved. the photos are shocking, inspiring, powerful and revealing. if there was any doubt that photoblogging will change the world, it’s forever gone. and the beauty of the internet is that you're one click away from being part of this groundbreaking moment!...
