highlights from this year's Dutchess County Fair…
- tons of animals you can pet, lots of baby pigs & cows
- fresh squeezed lime fizz drinks
- the wild energy, throbbing lights, loud music, and tweaked-out kid’s faces along the midway at night

midway

- pig races, especially the hilarious giant pot bellied (that move so slow)
- scary old carny lady “fool guesser” (who guessed everyone’s weight wrong for like 5 people in a row) trying to flirt with the young dudes. in her scratchy cigarette voice “hey are you winking at me”
- fresh cut Idaho potato fries, served in a giant dog bowl (we loved them with mustard)

fries

- wood smoked roast beef sliced super thin and pilled on a fresh roll with horseradish, onion and beef broth
- colorful, jamming mummer parade winding it's way around

mummers

- frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, fried dough, fresh strawberry shortcake, 4-H milkshakes and more
- overhearing a kid say to his Dad “this is the funnest day!”
- Charo rocking the house with her Vegas act and 50 year old jokes. a totally fabulous performance, singing to babies, dancing with people in the crowd. she entertained everyone young and old. and you walk away feeling Charo loves you.

charo2004

- loved everything in the canine tent from rescue dogs to crazy agility shows
- all kinds of farm and agriculture displays, funny, educational, more baby animals
- watching the baby watch everything, love everything and want everything (baby wants a mustard fry, baby wants a monkey, baby wants Charo)

Korean mandu – the other dumpling

mandoo2

for dumpling lovers in NYC, Mandoo Bar has brought some fresh flavor to the scene. a small café on 32nd in the heart of the city’s best known strip of Korean restaurants and shops, Mandoo Bar features several varieties of delicious handmade mandu/dumplings (made right in the front window by friendly workers.) these dumplings have a slightly thicker skin than the Chinese variety we love at places like the Dumpling House, and are usually steamed. all kinds of wonderful fillings, our hands-down favorite are the pork and kimchee. around $7 for 10, restaurant is simple, clean and friendly and offers other tasty dishes but for us it’s all about the mandu. if you’re a dumpling lover (or kimchee lover) these are a must try!

mandoo

32nd St also offers some of the best Korean BBQ in the city. one of our favorites is Kunjip, but we frequently search Chowhound for new ideas. and you can pick up kimchee and other great Korean food at any of a number of shops on the strip.

to learn more about mandu and other Korean food check out FatMan Seoul. a great GREAT Korean food blog with pages of amazing foods described and photographed in detail.

His Royal Thighness is our main go to guy for juicy and hilarious commentary on all kinds of media punditry. but he caught us with a hook punch this week with his incredible piece about hanging out with his niece last weekend. funny, real and touching stuff. someone should hire this guy to write full time.

new LES bar
caught this tip in the weekly email from Nichelle Newsletter
“I heard about the new bar opening on Essex called Boss Tweed's Saloon and I initially rolled my eyes in disgust. Oh no, not another hipster bar opening on the Lower East Side!... However, I heard today that there is an outdoor beer garden, and I have quickly changed my tune.”

love a good beer garden! checked out their site and found some more juicy news… $2 Buds and Rheingolds ALL DAY!! (and it looks like they’ll have food.) we’ll be checking this one out…

Update: haven't checked it out yet, but reader C. kindly sent this in...
"walked by there tonight, out with the boyfriend and his best friend, in from long island. (keep this in mind, long island)... it was really, really bad. they were blasting bon jovi really, really loud. plus it was too
bright and way empty. didn't go in to see the beer garden though so maybe that makes up for it, but it wouldn't necessarily help the bon jovi factor. it was a good thought though, there, for a minute. and it could improve." reader feedback ROCKS (and saves us some time) thanks C.!

purple MF’s
conversation in a bar a couple weeks ago…
Us (to cute girl who’s been looking over): “I’m trying to figure out where I know you from?”
Girl: “hey, I used to be at your night at Babyland all the time. I was just telling my friends – ‘I think that’s a bartender I used to know’”
Us: “oh yeah! didn’t you and me and like 5 other girls make out one night? ”
Girl: "I don't think that was me"
Us: “they all went home and had an orgy”
Girl: “dam, I missed that. I did dance topless on the bar a couple times with a bunch of girls. and I remember you used to make these great shots – purple mother-fuckers”

good reminiscences of Babes in Babyland, purplemfthe Girl Party we threw at Babyland Bar in the 90’s... the party was INSANE. lots of dancing, late nights, hot women and sex. our boy Pete wanted the bar back job, so the trade off was that he had to wear a leather diaper and baby bonnet. turns out the girl we were talking to, Terri, has a cool band these days Triple Crème.

coincidentally, at the Dark Room opening we ran into 2 people who used to hang at another place we bartended, NoTell Motel, and they mentioned the Purple Mother-Fuckers. an excellent summer party drink/shot - a smooth Grape Kool-Aid effect for your light weight friends, but made with quality stuff for drinks snobs...
crushed ice, double shot of good vodka, splash of Chambord, and fresh squeezed lemon, shaken and served straight up. (1/4 lemon per serving, not too much Chambord or it will taste like cough syryp.) beautiful, refreshing and packs a punch!

LES soul sucking
another staple of LES anti-culture and artistic freedom has been kicked out of the hood. the Collective Unconscious Theater group was recently forced to leave their space on Ludlow to make way for a new “luxury apartment building” (they’ve now moved to 279 Church St.) we love the "Starbucks" and "The Gap" kiss-off they tagged up on the building front before they left…

and it seems one of our favorite local bar gardens Barrimundi, is shortly to follow. but fortunately it looks like they’ve found a new home at 67 Clinton St – yay! (some good quotes from Lockhart Steele of Curbed in the article) more on changing Clinton St. here.

the NY Press article also tipped us that one of our all time favorite LES bars – Motor City - might be is for sale (that would truly SUCK!)

street fight video motherload
a friend sent us this link to the Danzig fight that made the rounds last month. We’re late to the fight on this one but it totally rocks seeing smug-ass Glenn Danzig get knocked down by a single punch in a fight he starts. the inside word on the fight from the guy who knocked him down and comments on message boards are great reads.

danzigpunch

this story inspired us to google for street fight videos, and we stumbled on this f'ing GREAT post on EbaumsWorld by Smoothy, where he put together a List With Over 60 Amatuer/Street Fight Video's!

we haven't even gotten through them all yet, but there's some crazy shit, like...
- 4 jocks harass skater Mike Vallely and he opens a can of whoop ass on them
- a man and woman go at it. she kicks his butt all over the neighborhood, but he keeps coming back for more. with an unbelievable moment where it looks like the police are coming in, but the cop car goes right by them without stopping!
- everything you could want in a backyard girlfight

Update: Reader PC sent this in... "Glenn Danzig is a student and instructor of the Jeet Kune Do Concepts which was developed by Bruce Lee. He was taught by Jerry Poteet who was a student of Lee's. Danzig should know better. A proper martial artist engages in confrontation only as a last resort." - unbelievable! Danzig is such a mook.

favorite upstate farm stands
after our heirloom tomato report last week, Josh, from the excellent, all around and NY-ish food site – The Food Section, sent this over... “Mmmm. We just had some ourselves tonight (by way of Chelsea Market). Unfortunately they were a whopping $4.99/pound!! How much when you buy them from the source?”

so we checked and the word on the prices is even better than we thought… at our favorite farm, Green Acres, their wonderful heirlooms are only $1.29 a pound! for any of the several varieties that come in all different colors, shapes and sizes (including one that is green when fully ripe!) each has a flavor that’s so intense and wonderful. we spoke with the Yanick family who grow everything right out back on the farm about their heirlooms. found out that it’s a very tricky crop to grow because the tomatoes tend to split due to their odd shapes (and too much rain causes disease in the plants) they decided to try growing heirlooms 3 years ago and jumped in head first. the quality and flavors have been excellent, but it’s been a rough sell upstate (with the odd shapes and colors.) we encourage any heirloom lovers, stores or chefs out there to visit the Yanick's for your heirloom supply! (they should be in abundance through the beginning of Sept) they also have amazing peaches, squash, sugar plums and homemade pies!

farm1

here’s the scoop on how to get there, and we’ve thrown in info on other stands to check out … there are many great farms throughout NY state; this strip has some of the best we’ve found. there are about 6 stands. a couple are big and have a gourmet-goods slant, but our favorites are the small, homey stands that are directly in front of the farms, and sell only produce that has been grown right there. in addition to the Yanick’s farm known as Green Acres (with a big blue barn) we like the Edger Bros stand for a big mix of home grown fruits and vegetables, and another stand that’s simply a platform truck on the side of the road that sells that best and cheapest corn in the area (in peak season we’ve seen as low as 12 ears for $1)

farm2

this strip of farm stands is located in Columbia County on RT’s 23 & 82 (right off the Taconic Pky/Hudson exit, or about 10 miles east of exit 21 on the NY State Thruway – this map points about dead-center in the row of stands)

yoga for anarchists
walking home yesterday we look up above our local deli on Allen and Stanton, and see a row of giant windows, brightly lit with no covering, and a room full of sweaty people flexing inside. has a new Lucile Roberts opened in the LES? nope, it’s a big brand new yoga center lighting up all of Allen St - Bikram Yoga Lower East Side. couple of our neighbors look up with us and laugh at the spectacle of half naked bodies dripping sweat and stretching about in the big brightly lit windows and wonder “is this a good thing?”… (not the yoga center, a lovely addition of course, but...) oy vay - do we have to look at those fit bodies as we make our beer and ice cream runs to the deli below?!

steal this logo - the new and improved CNN light
remember when CNN could be considered a decent, center-line media source? HAHAHA!! these days CNN has no qualms about blasting their conservative, right-wing bias - from increasingly lame coverage and overt avoidance of ANYTHING that could be perceived even slightly liberally, to deliberately uninformative coverage of the democratic convention. their website reads like pure Bush propaganda, with daily front and center Bush video clips/promotions, and insidious quotes peppering so many articles (political or not). even their overall news reporting has become almost remedial.

friends of ours have a brilliant theory that, whether for ratings, political motives, or both - CNN has made a deliberate corporate determination to become more like FOX! and sent us over this amazing logo they put together and hilarious note -

neighborhood loyalty
continuing with submission Thursday... reader Marissa was kind enough to share a story she'd written on life in NYC. we love this snippet on neighborhood aesthetics...
“New Yorkers carry immense pride for the neighborhoods they live in. Here in New York it’s no shock that homeless people live on almost every single street. But what you may not realize is that even they proudly represent their neighborhoods. For instance, I live in an area called Murray Hill. It’s known for being a little pretentious and somewhat high-fashion. Therefore, the homeless woman who lives outside my building stylishly sports Ugg Boots, a Louis Vuitton bag and Gucci shades. If that’s not neighborhood loyalty, I don’t know what is!"

seeing Adam Purple outside our door in the LES everyday, we give this observation a hearty AMEN!

hidden history
we love NYC construction. not just for the giant cranes, wonder bread trucks and sexy hard hats, but the amazing peak it can give into New York's past. after seeing our post earlier this week on the Chashama demolition, reader EG sent over this great pic he snapped last month; catching an interesting piece of history peaking out, that's now gone forever...

new bar opening on Ludlow tonight!
the Dark Room – a BEAUTIFUL new bar opens tonight in the former location of Ludlow Bar (formerly, formerly the Ludlow St Café, for old schoolers.) with promises of an open bar from 8-10!

darkroom

2 of our genius artist/design friends who’ve been behind some of the best bars on both coasts (Beauty Bar, the Coral Room and Tainted Lady Lounge are some in NYC) have been working on the interior, so we snagged a preview - and it’s fucking fabulous! dark, sleek, sexy and welcoming. gorgeous stone used throughout, big bars with rich, dark wood, great lighting, big luxurious padded boths all around. the deep colors and textures used on the walls bring it all together casting an elegant and warm vibe. sound system looks excellent, and the owners promise a cool assortment of DJ’s. we thought the LES had everything, but this new spot is actually a very cool addition. (the photos above were taken during construction, we'll bring you more tomorrow!)

the Dark Room is located at 165 Ludlow St., between Houston and Stanton. ironically, on the same block where the Luna Lounge is being forced to leave (as we learned from Curbed this week)

hot tomato
there’s a reason why you’ll see heirloom tomatoes on the menus of some of the city’s best restaurants right now... they have a rich, deep and bright flavor, and come in beautiful variety of shapes and colors. heirlooms have a had a major resurgence in both the gardening and epicurean communities over the last few years. they’re one of our favorite foods, and call for the simplest of preparations. like an open-face tomato sandwich: a piece of toast, with a smear of mayo and a couple fresh slices on top.

heirloom1

so many great varieties, and each have their own unique characteristics and undertones. one of the most flavor packed is the pink fleshed Brandywine shown below. they’re available at the Union Square green market and other farm markets around the city. but our secret spot for scoring an inexpensive, freshly picked assortment is a little old family farm stand called “Green Acres” in Columbia County about hours above the city (at the Hudson exit off the Taconic, 3 miles west on Rt. 82.) and by-the-way – don’t be afraid of their funny look, the ugly ones are often the tastiest! (and as the pic below shows, once you slice them open, inside it’s another story.)

for the love of Claire!
after all the hot hetero and gay sex we’ve watched week after week herwoman1on Six Feet Under, they let us down with Claire’s lesbian sexcapade (starting at the end of one show and then ending at the beginning of the show the next week.) the whole 5 minute relationship was really poorly written. this quote off the official site reminds us of bad 50’s lesbian pulp fiction

“Claire tries to set the mood for a night of passion with Edie, but even the most romantic setting can't turn her into a lesbian. When Edie again fails to give Claire an orgasm, the two finally agree that Claire isn't gay.”

Hmmm, we’ve seen a few guys that Claire’s been very passionate for fail to give her an orgasm… does that mean she’s not straight? the previews hinted of another classic 50’s lesbian pulp stereotype-storyline to come… Edie the jilted lesbian snaps!

and please, any lesbian who knows what’s up would have taken her time before going down on Claire. the big trick (beyond knowing how a woman’s body works) is building the excitement. holding back and holding back until she begs you to go down on her! (well that and using a couple fingers at the same time.)

anyway – since Six Feet Under left you hanging, here’s our similar, true story. with a more fruitful outcome…

in our mid-20’s in the course of an evenings conversation about sex at our apartment with a close girlfriend (who was 22, straight, same boyfriend for 6 years, from a very religious family, no drugs or alcohol), she reveals that although she loves sex, she thinks she’s never had an orgasm! as the conversation continues, we tell her we’ve been with someone with the same situation. then go into the story a bit and, not in a suggestive way, but more that 20-somethin sex-brag-talk, we say that we “fixed that problem” for them. to which she replies “PROVE IT”

so we did; that night. and a couple more times after that. to be honest, she wasn’t even that hard to get off. as simple as this sounds, it seems she just didn’t know how it all worked. so after a couple weeks of incredibly hot sex we both went back to partners of the same sexual preference. she with a new found understanding of her body and me with a new appreciation for those 2 little words.

living the dream
last night, hangin out with our friend NO in the LES, we decide to have a little CityRag smoke-in on a main strip. but d’oh! neither of us has a light. we ask a bunch of people passing by, and a cool dude hands us a fresh pack of matches. so we ask him if he’d like to join our smoke-in. the 3 of us enjoy a leisurely smoke and good conversation in the lovely twilight breeze.

chsmoke

the pic is of the cool dude who materialized with the fire. sporting some awesome old school kicks, and a punk wrist band under his suit – corporate-monkey-punk style. as we parted we yelled that his pic would be on our site the next day and he shouted out a loud, resonating “YEEAAAH!” and then our boy NO summed up our little smoke-in moment perfectly with “we’re living the dream”

Allen St anarchy - a little LES history
we moved onto Allen St around 1988. at that time, just 16 years ago, the lower east side was like the wild west. raw, lawless, druggy - even friends who lived in the EV hesitated to venture down. here are some random memories from back in those dayz to help paint the picture…

allenmallthe Allen St Mall (the center island between the north and south lanes) was a virtual tent city of homeless people (with a heavy concentration of drug addicts and prostitutes) the main “city” was the area between Houston and Delancy (but trickling down all the way to where Allen becomes Pike and then hits the river) at this time the mall had built-in benches up and down on both sides. everything from tents and tarps to large cardboard boxes and construction debris were used to make make-shift homes. the city and police rarely, if ever, set foot in this area, and let the homeless be with no raids/evacuations.

entrancein the Allen St mall there was also a notorious entrance/hatch door to one of the deserted underground subway tunnels used by the homeless. we believe it was near the old, abandoned public bathrooms located right across the street from bragging gentrifiers at 115 Allen

during the 80’s and early 90’s just about any drug you wanted could be purchased at a number of store fronts along the east side of Allen between Stanton and Rivington. around 1989, Jane Fonda’s daughter, Vanessa Vadam, was busted for buying heroin on this block

there were many houses of prostitution in the area. one of the most well known ones was at 167 Allen. now a restaurant, but for decades a bodega was in this spot with an infamous whore-house in the basement. in the 12 years we witnessed its operation; it was very well known by everyone in the hood and never had a single bust by the cops. open in the daytime (closed around 6 pm) it usually had a busy business going by 9 am. the bodega was owned and run by this handsome old guy, Caesar. he had a big sign that said “Mr. Credit no here today”

allenstantonthe Yemen guys who own the deli on Allen and Stanton had a homey fried chicken place on the corner across the St. in what later became the Living Room (coincidentally – we noticed today construction is going on in this spot and were told a new bar/restaurant is coming in)

castilloa little off the Allen… Castillo De Jagua was the neighborhood food mainstay, serving up delicious cheap Latin food. they treated everyone who came in like family and fed everyone in the hood (you could eat and pay them back later if you were hurtin.) they still make one of the best and cheapest Cuban Sandwiches in the city. the then un-renovated, dark and dirty Sarah Delano Roosevelt park was hands-down the most dangerous park in all of NYC. and Adam Purple was still fighting the good battle to keep his community garden alive.

in the early 90’s the city decided to start raiding the homeless city and kick out all inhabitants. The raids didn’t seem to take permanent effect – so the city came in and REMOVED every single bench up and down the mall from Houston to Delancey, and the people living there moved for good.

that’s just a taste of what Allen St was like back then. and now we've come full circle, as the Parks Dept website has put up a notice that this summer they will start a redevelopment project of the Allen St Mall

tat bonding
tattoos can separate people. in a funny way, they’re designed to do that. but they equally bring people together. a couple weeks back we brought you the Killer Knees story about a candid photo taken of a friend’s tattoos and posted on a fotolog site, and then followed the trail as they learned of each other.

today’s shots were submitted by the subject of our Killer Knees post. these are her own street pics taken of an older tattooed man in lower Manhattan. they were mutually drawn to each other's body art and exchanged tours of their tats…

Interview with Travis Mills, aka Cuemaster, and BBQ NYC founder (all photos kindly provided by Travis)…

CR: What made you decide to start doing this?
Travis: The origin of BBQ NYC came late one night on Chowhound, back when I was a 24/7 visitor to the site - every summer tourists and locals alike bemoan the lack of quality barbecue in the city, sending out pleas for where to find it - finally I got so fed up with it, I wrote into one of the myriad "Where's the Best BBQ in the City?" threads that I was a barbecue chef from Texas and that it would be my mission to bring the good stuff here. I was able to generate a good amount of buzz and collect a few adventurous souls willing to lend a hand....most importantly, Bobby Richter who answered a call for pit smokers in the area on a BBQ related message board. Thank the heavens for him - he makes this thing go.

CR: How was this year's picnic?
Travis: Fantastic. I don't think there was a disappointed plate holder in the crowd.....the weather held up despite the biblical deluge the day before - it was magic. Hard work, but totally rewarding.

CR: How many people attended?
Travis: We sold out all 250 of our allotted spots lickity split, with well over a month to go. That was fine with me, but if you blinked, you missed it. I could have easily filled 600 spots. so there's that element of having to balance what's possible with what you can get away with. Our volunteer organizers were ridiculously overworked, even though none of them will tell you that it was work for them. To me, they get all the credit, especially my wife Amy, and Abby, Carey, Jessica, Sarah, Ellen. Tons of other folks helped out too. Our legal guy was a freakin genius. Bobby's crew, in addition to his trusty sidekicks Barry and Pete, his brother Michael and buddy Andy, also included one of the east coast's top BBQ champions. it's impossible to imagine what it would have been like without just one of them.

saucy

CR: Goals for next year?
Travis: Next year Bobby and I really want to incorporate a competition element to the proceedings. BBQ is so huge these days, we see the demand and we'd love to be right there at the top....then again, my favorite aspect of BBQ NYC is the down-home, intimate gathering feel we've been able to maintain. I like to call it a picnic with 250 of my closest strangers. But I think a competition would be fun, informal at first but then it could grow to something bigger - New York state doesn't have an official one as far as I know. but my first priority is to digest from this last one first!

Tips/notes:
- go to the official website for information on how to attend and to get on the mailing list BBQ-NYC.com (and there will be pix and updates about the event there in the coming days)
- the picnic is open to everyone – on a first come basis (you must sign-up in advance. the picnic sells out very quickly and no walk-ins are accepted)
- a wonderful, funny and info packed email goes out to all attendees before the picnic that includes every bit of information you need!

THIS JUST IN! check out these Chowhound Outer Boroughs board posts for MOUTH WATERING first hand reports from dedicated NY chowhounds who attended!! GREAT STUFF (thanks for the tip Bob!)

smoke in the city
CityRag would like to pass a big fatty to all our friends and readers out there writing us in support of our position that... organizing police efforts to hunt down, arrest and detain people for smoking a joint in NYC is a ridiculous waste of police resources and tax payer money! we're making this a permanent feature (atleast until NYPD policy is changed) and have added a new CityRag Smoke-in category. and furthering the cause, figured since we've gotten Mila drunk, we might as well get her high...

the lowdown on NY’s crazy summer weather
this summer’s weather sucks, with weekends regularly getting rained out. it seems like we went through this last year too. to get a grip on our sanity, CityRag peeped the National Weather Services site, to help verify what’s going on…

NOAA reports on various locations around NY, we used the Central Park location (all locations around NY are pretty similar), and looked at the “since June 1” comparison – and there we found our answer…

this year’s PRECIPITATION (INCHES) SINCE JUN 1 is 10.90. the average is 8.74, so in the last 2 months we’ve had almost a 25% increase in the average amount of rain. and last year it was even worse, by this same time, NYC had recieved 14.87 inches of rain, around a 75% increase in the normal rain flow for June and July!

lightning

so the weather HAS been wet and whacky for a couple summers now! it’s good to know we’re not going crazy. we’re actually happy to be drought free, and enjoy the exploding lighting storms (this shot of lighting hitting a tree roadside was taken during the crazy storm this last Friday) but miss the swimming. and one more step towards sanity... the Gothamist is feeling it too!

Farm stands update - it's lookin' peachy out there...
between NJ, PA, Long Island and Upstate NY – at this point in the season - grocery stores, green markets, and farm stands are loaded with fresh and local fruits and vegetables. some highlights right now are – heirloom tomatoes and local peaches – both are bursting with bright and intense flavor. we find the heirloom tomatoes to blow all others (hybrids, beefsteak, etc) out of the water with amazing, deep flavor. but when it comes to peaches, a midst the myriad of new stuff on the market (white peaches, “Saturn” shapes, etc) we find the traditional variety to hold-up as the best available for juicy and firm texture and that pure, intense peach flavor.

peachy

some hot tips…
- ask at your market “what’s local” and fresh
- some items may be ripe now in warmer areas closer to the city, but as the season progresses, a continuing flood of fruits and vegetables will arrive as things start to come into season in the cooler areas upstate.
- apples are NOT in season yet. they’re not picked until September – if it says NY apple right now its last years!
